The purpose of Crossway has been, from its founding as a not-for-profit ministry in 1938, to publish gospel-centered, Bible-centered content that will honor our Savior and serve his Church. They seek to help people understand the massive implications of the gospel and the truth of God’s Word, for all of life, for all eternity, and for the glory of God.
I discovered journaling Bibles earlier this year, and fell in love. I reviewed my own journaling Bible in this video. It’s an ESV Single Column Journaling Bible. However, when I had the opportunity to review Crossway’s newest ESV Journaling Bible, I jumped at the chance. This one isn’t single column, but it’s still fabulous!
The newest ESV Journaling Bible from Crossway is a cloth-covered hardback Bible with an outer sleeve. Love it!!! It’s so pretty and feels wonderful to hold. Makes me wanna snuggle up with God’s Word.
This new ESV Journaling Bible has several features that mine doesn’t, starting with the book introductions. The book introductions are all in the back, and all together, which is actually really nice and if you read them through it gives a great birds-eye-view of the Bible. When you start a new chapter as you are reading through, it tells you what page number you can find the book introduction on. One of my favorite parts of the ESV Journaling Bibles is that they aren’t study Bibles and don’t have any excess notes to distract you. Keeping the book introductions at the end helps keep it that way. Any notes on the pages are your own (other than the translation notes at the bottom).
This Bible also has a two sections at the beginning that are helpful. “What the Bible Says About” has a small topical index type list. And “Why Read the Bible” gives a short introduction to the Bible.
There is a section called “God’s Plan to Save You” at the end (after Revelation) that gives a great rendition of salvation from Genesis on. Including a copy of the sinners prayer.
A few other notes about ESV Journaling Bibles:
In the back you will find a one-year Bible reading plan. It’s a traditional plan with Old and New Testament passages to read each day along with a section from Psalms.
The text is pretty tiny, but that’s pretty normal for Bibles. I have a few other Bibles that have equally tiny text, but several that have larger fonts, none that have smaller.
I use gel highlighters in mine, but I have been told that the pages are thick enough that regular highlighters won’t bleed through… I wasn’t brave enough to test that out though. The pages seem pretty thin to me, but they are slightly thicker than the pages on most study Bibles. Meaning they are thick enough they don’t rip when you turn the pages.
Over all, I LOVE my ESV Journaling Bible, and this new one is just as fantastic!
